I was approached by a young man named Ohr (Hebrew for “Light”), from Kibbutz Kfar Maccabi in northern Israel, east of Haifa. He told me has become stronger Jewishly of late, and has started going to Torah classes, and would love to have his own tefillin to wear every morning. He emphasized how important it was to him, saying he would go anywhere in the country to pick them up. I was very happy to hear it, and told him I could get him a set of tefillin.
But when I called him a few days later, he said it was no longer necessary – because his parents were already taking care of it! How did that happen, I asked? He said that they had heard of an organization called OHR CHADASH (!), and when they found out what we do, they decided that they wanted to be a part of such an initiative themselves – so they decided to buy him, with their own money, a beautiful pair of high-quality tefillin!
